30. March to 6 April 2025
Chemnitz and the Capital of Culture region

The Chemnitz 2025 main project Living Neighbourhood is kicking off spring with the "Aufbruch" planting festival. From 30 March to 6 April 2025, numerous apple trees will once again be planted, cared for and celebrated in Chemnitz and the region. The planting festival promotes the communal design of the respective living environment.

Opening festival
The planting festival begins on 30 March with a European touch: under the title "Rise like an apple tree. An ESC Lookalike", Chemnitz residents will present musical highlights from the history of the Eurovision Song Contest in their own productions at the Chemnitz Weltecho - with lip synching, shuffle dancing and vocal strengths, colourful and full of charisma.

A week full of plantings
Until 6 April, there will be planting events from Chemnitz to the Capital of Culture region: at locations such as Lichtenwalde Castle, correctional centre Bernsdorf (JVA), dem Hof zur bunten Kuh in Frankenberg and Chemnitz City Park. A total of around 420 trees will be planted on 14 planting dates. Citizens and the entire neighbourhood are invited to come along, exchange ideas and help shape their surroundings.

Planting highlights
Over 160 trees will be planted at a large-scale planting in Chemnitz City Park (31 March). From 12 noon to 6 p.m., anyone interested can come along and plant a tree themselves.

Also on 31 March, inmates from the correctional centre Chemnitz (JVA) will be planting apple trees. Please contact the press by Monday, 24 March 2025 at presse@chemnitz2025.de.

On 1 April, the local council, the Makerhub Lehngericht and the DPFA Regenbogengymnasium will be involved in a planting campaign at several locations in Augustusburg.

On 2 April, planting will take place in Lichtenwalde Castle and Baroque Garden. As early as the 16th century, Elector Augustus encouraged the cultivation and care of fruit trees in the palace garden. Apple, pear, plum and cherry trees were cultivated here until the 19th century. This tradition is now being continued with the planting of new apple trees.

Holzkombinat, Buntmacher*innen e.V. and Decathlon are organising a festival for the planting event in the Chemnitz Industrial Museum's outdoor area on 6 April. Trees will be planted and raised beds planned from 2 pm.

One of the special features of the "Aufbruch" planting festival is that many committed players - including local authorities, cultural institutions, churches, associations and companies such as Deutsche Post AG, ECL euro.COURIER Logistics, Homatec and Decathlon - are helping to actively shape the shared living space. Together, they are putting more than 600 different apple varieties in the ground.

Living neighbourhood: acting sustainably together
The Chemnitz 2025 main project Living Neighbourhood is all about sustainable cooperation. As planting partners, organisations take on the care of young apple trees and look after them for at least twelve years. The project offers fruit tree pruning courses, workshops and excursions on various topics to provide further training.

The next "Harvest" planting festival will take place in autumn from 19 to 26 October 2025.
