Discover street art in Chemnitz on your own: We have put together a route that you can explore on your own during your stay in Chemnitz. Between February 2024 and July 2025, eight murals were created on the facades and surfaces of buildings in Chemnitz. The artworks were created by artists from Germany and abroad who took part in the Hallenkunst artist residency programme. Hallenkunst is showing a graffiti and street art exhibition in the Chemnitz market hall from 28 August 2025 to 21 September 2025. More than 70 national and international artists will present works from the fields of painting, photography, illustration, design and music.
Welcome to Chemnitz: At the main railway station
The large lettering FÜRCHTET EUCH NICHT by the artist duo Doppeldenk welcomes travellers in front of Chemnitz main station. The lettering is more than just a biblical quote: in GDR times, religion and communist state ideology were at odds with each other. The SED dictatorship regarded the church as an ideological competitor. Nevertheless, places of worship remained spaces of freedom and refuge during this time. Many opposition activities in the revolutionary autumn of 1989 originated in these places. FEAR NOT is a call to take courage, a testimony of hope. Today, this message is a reminder that change is possible.

Against forgetting: Falk "Akut" Lehmann has created a very special mural: The portrait of Holocaust survivor Justin Sonder (1925-2020) adorns the façade of the house on Glockenstraße. "I wanted to survive" is written in grey letters, a sentence that Justin Sonder coined when looking back on his time in the Auschwitz concentration camp. It is Falk Lehmann's third picture of Holocaust survivors, which are known under the title "Against Forgetting". The Thuringian-born artist often focuses on social and societal issues in his large-scale works.

Claudia Walde aka MadC kicked off the residency programme in February 2024 with her abstract painting Tgif. The artist and author studied at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle and at Central Saint Martins College in London. Walde is currently one of the world's best-known graffiti artists. Her works can be found in Europe, South Africa, Mexico, Hong Kong and the USA. The mural on Johannisplatz is based on a series of canvases that will be presented at the HALLENKUNST exhibition. On the neighbouring wall is a robot model made from 3D software by Jonas Bond aka Bond Truluv. Visitors have the best view of the mural entitled CLOUD XP from Johannisplatz, near the entrance to the former Borssenanger Gallery. Czech artist Jan Kaláb has created a colourful mural on the opposite side. The curved stripes, which change from purple to red and yellow, run along the façade.

Tucked away between restaurants, a supermarket and a pub on a low-rise building on Getreidemarkt is the newly created mural by the Berlin artists' collective NIZA. They have created a mural made of matchboxes and figures on the former craftsmen's yard.

The mural by the artist collective VIDEO & SCKRE from Munich and Linz sets an example for global justice and climate protection. Together with Greenpeace, the collective has created an impressive mural that draws attention to the endangered Marshall Islands in the Pacific. The islanders are massively affected by rising sea levels - a drastic example of how the climate crisis is already affecting people in the Global South.

The large-format wall design by artist Hendrik Beikirch can be found on the site of today's A4 industrial estate in Chemnitz. The work deals with a decisive chapter in German history: the peaceful revolution and the upheavals that followed. Former employees of VEB Numerik "Karl Marx" are on display.
