Dance of the generations through Chemnitz

Dance connects. The Generation team of the Capital of Culture initiated a programme that united contemporary and urban dance as well as improvisation and brought together older and younger people. Amateurs and professionals met Yoko Ando, a globally acclaimed dancer and choreographer from Japan, known for her work with the Forsythe Company. Ando supported the Dancing Neighbours and offered training sessions. Since 2019, she has been the artistic director of a similar dance programme for older people ("Challenge of the Silver") in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

The focus of Dancing Neighbours is on intercultural exchange through non-verbal dialogue that unfolds through shared movement, creative expression and energy. Dance courses for older participants were held regularly and supplemented by workshops. Workshops fusing urban dance styles and contemporary dance were offered for younger participants.

The Dancing Neighbours performed at the opening of the Capital of Culture, the KOSMOS Festival and at the Saxon State Parliament.
