The Mittweida Sukkot

Art + Life at the Feast of Tabernacles

From 5 to 12 October 2025, the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 and the city of Mittweida invited visitors to the Sukkot Mittweida festival. For one week, Mittweida's city centre became a place for art, music, readings, culinary encounters and discussions about Jewish life yesterday and today.

The starting point was the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles Sukkot, which celebrates joy, gratitude and community. The Sukkah, the hut of leaves as a symbol of hospitality, took centre stage. Poet and curator Yona Dvir-Shalem turned this idea into a lively experience for everyone: under the title Ushpisin, 25 international artists presented installations and exhibitions spread across empty shops, the university, the city church, the city museum and other locations.

The programme also included concerts, readings, panel discussions, culinary performances such as East on East and a communal Shabbat meal as an artistic installation. Film and theatre fans also got their money's worth: a free cinema day showed international films, including the Oscar-winning No Other Land, and a theatre laboratory invited visitors to explore.

The festival was organised by the city of Mittweida, Mittweida University of Applied Sciences and Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH, supported by the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung. It was part of the PURPLE PATH, the art and sculpture trail of the Capital of Culture.

Sukkot Mittweida also forged a link to history: Jewish students were still able to enrol in Mittweida until 1938, while access was already denied in other places. The festival explored this legacy and created a dialogue between the past, present and future in conjunction with contemporary art.
