Democratic Chemnitz reads!

In memory of the book burnings by the National Socialists in 1933

On 10 May 1933, the National Socialists' book burnings reached their peak: to the applause of tens of thousands, Nazi students publicly threw books and writings by unpopular authors, artists and scientists into the fire. Much of the ‘beautiful’ and humanistic literature of the time was consumed by the flames.
On 10 May 2025, the people of Chemnitz read from ‘burned’ literature and courageous texts that defied hatred and exclusion and advocated for open, solidarity-based and diverse coexistence in memory of these barbaric events. As in the past three years, democratic Chemnitz read aloud from sunrise to sunset in many voices and languages, in places of culture and education, but also in public spaces.
