How is a theatre created? How do architecture and forms of theatre performance relate to each other? The history of the Chemnitz theatre is told in the context of these questions. In addition to research on the city and the architecture of Rudolf Weißer, interviews with former and current theatre actors provide insights into the artistic work, performances and venues. The chronological arc spans from the theatre in Karl-Marx-Stadt to its most recent developments in the European Capital of Culture. The publication is also of particular importance and topicality in view of the recent debates about renovating and preserving the existing theatre and the proposal for a new building. The book with photographs by Louis Volkmann was published by Theater der Zeit 2025.
