May You Help: Junk exhibition and auction

The history
On Sunday, 11 July 1897, pupils of the Komotau grammar school organised a special charity event: a junk exhibition. The inhabitants of the town brought old, unnecessary objects, which the pupils remodelled and gave new names and meanings. For example, a simple broom was transformed into a "bear rifle". Everything was sold with humour, and the proceeds went towards the construction of a new gymnasium - today's sports hall. The exhibition might have long been forgotten had it not been for Karl May's visit. The famous writer donated to the collection and sent his friends in Hamburg a postcard with verses in which he referred to the Komotau "junk exhibition" with a smile.

And today?
128 years later, there is a reunion.
The Výstava harampádí / Junk Exhibition transforms the Kulisárna space in Komotau into a lively marketplace where things take on new meanings and everything comes to life through improvised theatre. The exhibited and sold objects are designed by the participants of the You May Help workshop.

Now it's your turn!
Take a look at what you no longer need at home and give things a second life: the collection runs until 6 October 2025, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 16:00. Artist Tereza Zemanová and a team of local artists will take care of your items. The results will be on display at Kulisárna on 19 October.

This is what you can expect:
- newly designed objects "what the house had to offer"
- short theatre scenes at the stands
- Brambůrky theatre play - Hansel and Gretel with a difference
- Auction of heroes - auction of strange objects and figures
And who knows - maybe Karl May will turn up again.

For a good cause
As in 1897, the exhibition has a charitable purpose today. The proceeds will support the Parent Project in Droužkovice.
