As part of the  symposium ‘Wood Meets Stone’, six wood artists are inviting children to take part in a wide-ranging programme of hands-on activities. Together, they aim to give children the chance to try their hand at craftsmanship, boost their sense of self-efficacy and instil democratic values such as cooperation, creativity and diversity. The children will also learn to understand the importance of sustainability by discovering how to use natural materials such as wood and stone responsibly. The event will take place over the weekend of 19–20 September 2026 at the Jahnsdorf outdoor swimming pool and forms a child-friendly highlight of the family festival. The activities are free of charge, inclusive and open to all children in the region.

In the Ore Mountains, craft skills such as woodcarving, stonemasonry and woodturning have a long cultural tradition. However, many children today grow up without any practical connection to these techniques. Everyday life is often characterised by the use of digital media, academic pressure and a lack of opportunities for artistic and craft-based expression. Furthermore, particularly in rural areas, there is often a disconnect between traditional cultural values and modern lifestyles. The ‘Wood Meets Stone’ symposium offers a low-threshold, cross-generational platform to playfully convey the cultural heritage of (art)crafts through active, hands-on activities, to spark curiosity and to enable participation – regardless of background, education or family circumstances.
