Fritz51

A festival between, above, and with concrete

Rows of boxy concrete buildings are strung along the former Fritz Heckert housing development, stretching across several parts of town. In the 1990s, 90,000 people lived in these prefab apartment blocks, but after reunification they moved out and demolition followed. One third of the buildings was torn down. Located among the remaining buildings, the FRITZ51 festival is a celebration of the material of concrete. Visitors can enjoy an exhibition full of sculptures, a psychogeographical archive of the area, odes to and songs about concrete or prefab buildings, and biscuits that look like concrete slabs.
