The festival for culture, music and democracy: 13 to 15 June 2025

On 13 June 2025, KOSMOS Chemnitz, the largest event in the European Capital of Culture 2025 programme, will kick off with a special concert: the Chemnitz band Blond will present their recently released studio album "Ich träum doch nur von Liebe" together with the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra, the orchestra of the Chemnitz Theatre, in a live show on Theaterplatz.

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to attend KOSMOS, which will take place for the first time in the Capital of Culture year over three days from 13 to 15 June and will be held in the area around the castle pond in the centre of the city. After the grand opening ceremony in January, this unique free festival is one of the highlights of the Capital of Culture year. Like the entire programme for Chemnitz 2025, KOSMOS relies on civil society participation and is largely shaped by Chemnitz residents.

KOSMOS Chemnitz was created in 2018 as a direct response to right-wing riots in the city. At the time, committed Chemnitz residents organised a concert entitled #wirsindmehr (we are more) as a statement for tolerance, which was attended by 65,000 guests. In the years that followed, Kosmos developed into an important tool for social interaction thanks to the participation of many people. The festival sees itself as a platform for Chemnitz stakeholders, associations, initiatives, institutions and companies to showcase what the city has to offer in many different formats and how they envision a democratic future for Chemnitz and Europe.

The three-day Capital of Culture edition includes around 300 programme items ranging from concerts, hands-on activities, panel discussions, sporting events, theatre, performances and workshops. The activities of more than 150 participants at around 70 locations will revolve around socially relevant issues. The formats are as diverse as the festival itself. The uniqueness and quality of KOSMOS also lie in the cross-genre combination of content. There are political talks in the restaurant, dancing at the crossroads, a bottle post office in the castle pond and much more.
