Microproject | Journal launch: Back to Black? Crisis, authoritarian radicalisation, and counterstrategies in the 21st century

Key arguments from the booklet ‘Back to Black?’ regarding the Kantine Festival at Subbotnik will be presented and discussed. Do comparisons with historical fascism help to explain today’s far-right extremism? What might anti-fascist practice look like today?

Even though the far right today does not present itself as a paramilitary organisation like the Italian Blackshirts, many are currently warning of a return to fascism. Is this justified? Why are right-wing movements so successful today, and what can be done to counter them? The recently published booklet ‘Back to Black?’ attempts to formulate answers based on the contributions made at the Kantine. These are sometimes local, sometimes global, sometimes theoretical, sometimes activist in nature, but what they have in common is that they view the current state of affairs as untenable.

We want to present key arguments from the booklet, spark your interest in reading it and in the Kantine Festival, and invite you to discuss with us the question of appropriate anti-fascist practice in the present day.

This follows on from the Kantine Festival held in July 2025 at the Subbotnik, which took place under the title ‘Kantine-Arditi – on Fascism and Anti-Fascism’.
