Edward W. Saïd (1935 - 2003), born in Jerusalem, spent his childhood and early youth there and in Cairo, lived, loved and taught mainly in the United States of America. He was a respected defender of the Palestinian cause. With the beginning of the Oslo Accords, the distance to Arafat grew. It was Saïd who founded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim in 1999, with the intention of having 80 young musicians from Israel and the neighbouring Arab states play and perform together in Europe every summer.
